LAST TIME OUT
Wright State finally took the field for the first time in the 2021 season on Monday afternoon, playing a pair against Vanderbilt after waiting throughout the weekend due to inclement weather in the Nashville area. Facing two of the better pitchers in the country on Monday, the Raiders dropped the opener 14-1 before a tough, 1-0 loss in the second game. Wright State had its chances, stranding 12 runners in the first game and five more in the nightcap.
RETURNING TO THE FIELD
Wright State returns 30 players from last season's team, including infielder Tyler Black, who was named to the 2019 Horizon League First Team and All-Freshman Team after hitting .353 with 41 RBIs and 23 extra-base hits. The Canadian also had 38 walks in the shortened 2020 season. Fellow infielder Damon Dues was also named to the HL All-Freshman Team in 2019, and hit .316 in 2020 and .307 in the Raiders' last full season with 41 RBIs. He also had 28 steals in 35 tries. Outfielder Quincy Hamilton is coming off a .357 season, and first baseman/DH Zane Harris batted .284 and was seventh with 27 RBI in 2019.
LOOKING BACK AT 2020
The Raiders played 10 of their 15 games against nationally ranked opponents last season, and won four of their last five contests – including a series win at then-No. 11 Tennessee – before the remainder of the season was put on hold and ultimately canceled due to the pandemic. Wright State made the most of the shortened season, with three of its six wins coming against ranked programs, including a 10-3 victory at then-No. 1 Louisville on February 19. The Raiders won the series opener at then-No. 11 Tennessee on March 6 by a 5-4 score and capped the weekend and earned the series win with a 6-3 victory on March 8. Wright State's two wins at Tennessee turned out to be the Volunteers' only two losses.
