Game Recap: Baseball |

Raidergang takes both games of Sunday doubleheader to complete four-game sweep over NKU

The Wright State baseball team wrapped up a four-game sweep over Northern Kentucky with is second set of doubleheader wins this weekend, with the Raider offense leading the way to a 12-2 win in the opener before a 11-6 win to close the series.

Wright State (18-10, 17-3 HL) picked up its fourth four-game Horizon series sweep with the weekend wins, closing the regular season with an 8-0 record over the Norse (13-21, 11-16 HL).

On Sunday, the Raiders belted six home runs as part of 15 total extra-base hits between the two games, tallying 26 total hits and driving in 23 runs.

The first game saw Wright State score multiple runs in each of the first three innings, including four runs in the first inning keyed by Sammy Sass' three-run homer to right center field. Sass doubled home a run as part of the two run second before the homers picked up again in the third with Damon Dues' three-run shot to center field.

Gehrig Anglin got in on the RBI parade in the fifth with a run producing double before Zane Harris drove in two runs with his double in the sixth.

Austin Cline improved to 4-1 on the season after scattering six NKU hits and a pair of runs over five innings before Jay Luikart and Justin Hornschemeier each picked up a strikeout in their single innings pitched to close the win.

In addition to the homers from Dues and Sass, the Raiders also saw doubles from Sass, Harris and Anglin as part of the 11 hits. Sass' four RBI paced an offense that also saw Dues drive in three runs and six total Raiders collect an RBI.

Kyle Klingenbeck was saddled with the loss, allowing seven hits and four walks on the way to nine Raider runs in just 2.1 innings of work. Jayden Wakeham was the only NKU batter with multiple hits, while Brennan Gick's two-run homer in the Norse second inning would prove to be their only runs.

The Wright State offense carried over into the second game of the afternoon, with Quincy Hamilton connecting on a solo homer just two batters into the game before Alec Sayre later belted a three-run homer to left-center field and the Raiders had a four-run lead after the opening inning. After a Tyler Black sacrifice fly to plate a run in the second, the homers started again in the fourth with a Luikart solo shot before a solo homer from Justin McConnell in the sixth. Cameron Rountree drove home a run in the seventh before the Raiders added three final runs in the ninth via an Alex Alders' sacrifice fly and run-producing hits from Luikart (double) and McConnell.

Trailing 6-1, Northern Kentucky pieced together one offensive inning in the fourth, using a two-run single from Josh Romans that ended up plating an extra run on the play thanks to a Raider error, but the Norse would get no closer, as Wright State's Jake Shirk came on and stranded a pair of runners to end the threat.

Hamilton, Sass, Rountree, Luikart and McConnell all added doubles to go with the homers from Hamilton, Sayre, Luikart and McConnell. Sayre and McConnell each had three hit games, while Sayre drove in three RBI and seven different Raiders drove in a run overall.

Shirk earned his second win of the season after 2.1 innings of relief, striking out three batters and allowing two hits and a pair of walks. Starter Alex Theis did not factor into the decision after allowing five hits on six hits over the opening 3.1 innings of work.

Bryson Lonsbury took the loss after allowing six runs (five earned) over four innings of work, while the Norse offense saw nine of its 12 hits come from the top five in the order, highlighted by three hits from Jackson Haas.
