The top-seeded Wright State baseball team advanced to Saturday's 2021 Horizon League Championship game with a 15-4 win at Nischwitz Stadium over No. 2 UIC behind a pair of home runs from HL Player of the Year
Quincy Hamilton and a home run each from
Tyler Black and
Sammy Sass.
Â
The Raiders will take on No. 4 seed Milwaukee, who survived an 11-inning elimination game on Friday night, in the 2021 Horizon League Championship. First pitch is scheduled for a 1 p.m. from The Nisch.
Â
After UIC jumped ahead with a two-run homer from Joshua Figueroa in the top of the first, Raider starter
Bradley Brehmer allowed only three hits over the final eight innings on the way to his first career complete game and his eighth win of the season, striking out three batters with two walks allowed and the four total hits.
Â
The Raiders (34-11) chipped into the small deficit with a single run in the first inning on a Black RBI groundout before a six-run second inning, sending 10 batters to the plate with a two-run single from
Damon Dues and an RBI single from
Justin McConnell before Black delivered a three-run homer over the scoreboard in right field as Wright State took control of the game.
Â
Wright State added to the lead in the fourth with Hamilton's first homer, a two-run shot over the left field wall, before two runs from UIC in the top of the sixth. The Raiders wrapped up the win with a three-run homer in both the seventh and eighth frames. In the seventh, Sass set his three-right blast just inside the foul pole down the right field line before Hamilton connected on his second shot for a three-run homer of his own, clearing the scoreboard in right field.
Â
Sass finished with a game-high three hits and three RBI, while the Raiders had two hits from Dues, Hamilton, McConnell and
Alec Sayre as every player in the lineup had a hit. Hamilton's five RBI paced all players, while Black had four RBI.
Â
Matt Bottcher had two of UIC's four hits, while Figueroa drove in three RBI. Starter Chris Torres allowed seven runs on eight hits in 1.2 innings on the way to the loss.
