Raiders set to begin postseason, hosting HL Championships this weekend

DAYTON — The Wright State volleyball team captured its fourth Horizon League regular season title in five years, and with that comes hosting duties for the 2023 Horizon League Championship. Tournament action got underway on Friday, with the Raiders set to begin their postseason on Saturday afternoon in a 3 p.m. start against No. 6-seeded Cleveland State. Cleveland State was a four-set winner over No. 3 Milwaukee on Friday afternoon.

AWARDS SEASON
Wright State grabbed three major awards and nine overall honors on Thursday afternoon as the 2023 Horizon League Volleyball Awards were announced, led by Callie Martin's Player of the Year honor. Fellow fifth-year senior Katie Meyer earned Setter of the Year honors and Travers Green was named the Horizon League Coach of the Year for the second straight season. The good news didn't stop with the major awards, as Wright State recorded three First Team honors, with Megan Alders joining Martin and Meyer, while Jenny Wessling and Reilley Zegunis each earned Second Team recognition and Zegunis was also named to the All-Freshman Team.

POY'S POV
Callie Martin becomes just the second Raider ever to win the Horizon League's Player of the Year for the best overall player in the League, joining Karis Day's selection in 2001. Martin played and started all 29 of Wright State's contests while playing in 107 sets and has appeared in 124 matches and 432 total sets in her career. Her 314 total kills are the second-most on the Raider roster, as is her 2.93 kills/set average – both of which are ranked No. 13 in the Horizon League – while she's recorded 387.0 points and a 3.87 points per set average. Martin has 15 double-digit kill performances this season and recorded double-digit digs in 19 of 29 matches.

HERE WE ARE AGAIN
Wright State has now captured four of the last five Horizon League regular season titles to earn tournament hosting responsibilities. The Raiders added HL tournament titles to their resumes in 2020 and 2022. 

KNOW THE FOES
- No. 2 Green Bay comes into the postseason at 15-15 overall and riding a two-match winning streak. The Phoenix tallied eight home wins but combined for seven wins in road and neutral site contests. Hannah Vanden Berg and Tiffany Paalman earned All-League First Team selection.
- No. 3 Milwaukee begins the postseason 21-11 with a 2-3 mark in its last five matches. Madi Malone and Ari Miller both earned spots on the Horizon League all-conference first-team.
- No. 4 Northern Kentucky enters postseason action at 17-12 overall coming off back-to-back wins to close the regular season. Joy Banks (first team), Abby Kanakry (first team), Anna Burke (second team) and Ava Hoying (freshman) all earned Horizon League recognition.
- No. 5 Oakland comes into the postseason at 17-13 overall but having lost its final two regular season matches. Emily Wichmann was named HL Defensive Player of the Year with recognition for Patti Cesarini (second team) and Gentry Brown(freshman).
- No. 6 Cleveland State begins the postseason 16-13 with a 2-4 record in its last six matches. Cleveland State has combined for 10 wins in road and neutral site contests compared to six home wins. Liberty Torres was named to HL first team and Emma Walker named to second team.  

DEFEND McLIN
Since the start of the 2018 season, Wright State is 58-10 overall in home matches inside McLin Gymnasium after a 21-60 home mark (and just 54 total victories, home or otherwise) from 2011-2016. 

NATIONALLY SPEAKING. . .
Wright State enters the weekend No. 10 nationally with 37.81 team attacks per set and No. 29 in total team attacks (4,084), while the Raiders are No. 16 nationally in team digs per set (16.88) and No. 19 nationally total team digs (1,823). Individually, Jenny Wessling is ranked No. 13 with her 5.29 digs per set average, while her 571 total digs are also No. 13 nationally. Katie Meyer's 10.23 assists per set average is No. 48 in the country (No. 86, 921 total assists).

SETTING IT UP
Katie Meyer's selection as Horizon League Setter of the Year gives Wright State its second-straight HL Setter of the Year honor and third in the last four seasons after former Raider Lainey Stephenson captured top setting honors in 2020 and 2022. averaging 10.23 assists per set with 921 total assists, both of which lead the Horizon League. Her assists/set average is Top 45 nationally and her total assists are Top 75 nationally. Wright State leads the Horizon League with a team 12.72 assists/set average, currently ranked No. 28 nationally, while the Raiders' 13.69 kills per set average also leads the HL and is No. 28 nationally.

FRESH FACE
The selection of Reilly Zegunis to the Horizon League All-Freshman Team marked the second-straight season the Raiders have posted a freshman to the squad after Aaliyah Byers earned a selection on the team in 2022. Zegunis' 268 total kills and her 2.48 kills per set average are both the third-most on the Raider roster, with both marks Top 20 in the Horizon League. She has 11 double-digit kill performances and her 93.0 total blocks are the second-most on the Wright State roster and No. 9 in the Horizon League.

FIFTH YEAR FAVES
Graduate students Megan Alders and Callie Martin sit atop nearly all of Wright State's offensive categories, including kills (Alders 340, Martin 314), kills per set (Alders 3.18, Martin 2.93). The pair also pace the Raiders in total points and points per set while having logged the most attack attempts on the roster.
