FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The Wright State baseball program fell to No. 8 Arkansas 12-6 on Saturday evening at Baum-Walker Stadium.
The Raiders dropped to 2-7 overall, while the Razorbacks improved to 8-2 on the season. The teams will conclude the three-game series tomorrow at 2 p.m. ET tomorrow on SEC Network Plus.
Wright State finished with six runs on 10 hits and four walks, stranding nine runners on base.
Jay Luikart paced the offense by going 3-for-5 at the plate with a double, a solo homer, and two runs scored.
Andrew Patrick batted 2-of-5 with an RBI double, while
Drew Baker drilled a two-run triple in the ninth.
Boston Smith added a solo blast in his second at-bat of the game.
Starting pitcher
Sebastian Gongora (1-1) took the loss after allowing two runs on three hits and two walks in the opening inning.
Garrett Peters tossed a team-high 3.1 innings out of the pen, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out two batters. He finished his outing with back-to-back scoreless frames.
Joey Valentine shined out of the pen as he held the Hogs to one run, no earned, and just one hit in two innings of action.
The Razorbacks gained an early advantage after plating two runs on three hits and two walks in the bottom of the first inning. Wright State had a bases-loaded opportunity with two outs in the top of the second, but Riemer was robbed of a grand slam to end the inning.
Arkansas extended its lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the second inning after plating five runs on three hits and four walks.
Luikart put WSU on the scoreboard with a solo home run in the top of the third inning. However, The Razorbacks answered back with a two-run homer in the bottom of the frame to build Wright State's deficit to 9-1.
Smith connected on a solo home run to lead off the fourth inning, while Patrick hit an RBI double in the top of the fifth to close the Raider deficit at 9-3. Arkansas responded with a two-run homer in the sixth inning and a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth to extend its lead to 12-3.
The Raiders were held scoreless on one hit from the sixth to the eighth inning but plated three runs on a balk and a Baker triple in the top of the ninth.
