Raiders close regular season at Youngstown State

DAYTON — The Wright State baseball program concludes its regular season with a three-game series at Youngstown State from May 18-20. Live stats will be available for all three games at Eastwood Field in Niles, Ohio.Â

FIVE-PEAT
The Raiders swept Milwaukee last weekend to clinch their fifth consecutive Horizon League title (excluding the Covid-shortened 2020 season). Wright State will host the 2023 Horizon League Baseball Championship as the top seed at Nischwitz Stadium from May 24-27, with the League's six schools represented in a double-elimination bracket.Â
LAST TIME OUT
WSU is coming off a perfect 5-0 week at Nischwitz Stadium, taking down Dayton and UCF in midweek action to go along with a weekend sweep of Milwaukee. The Raiders outscored opponents 48-22 in the stretch, with eight-plus runs in every game. The pitching staff finished with a 3.20 ERA and 39 strikeouts, holding opponents to a .241 batting average.
HISTORY VS. YSU
Wright State leads the all-time series 93-39. The Raiders have won eight in a row versus Youngstown State dating back to the 2022 season. WSU swept YSU at home in the first series between the two teams in April 2023. WSU earned an 11-6 win in the series opener and a 10-6 win in the finale. Bottom Smith's two-out, two-run walk-off double lifted Wright State to a 4-3 victory in the second game of the series.
SCOUTING THE PENGUINS
Youngstown State is 17-34 overall and fourth in the Horizon League standings with an 11-15 record against conference opponents. The Penguins have won ten times in their last 12 games, highlighted by three-game sweeps against Milwaukee and Purdue Fort Wayne and a series victory at Northern Kentucky. YSU also boasts non-conference wins at Memphis, Baylor, and Pittsburgh.Â
The Penguins return several starters from a year ago, including Steven D'Eusanio, who is batting .307 with a conference-best 20 doubles. Trey Law has gone .375 at the plate with 26 RBI and 46 runs scored. Friday starter Travis Perry has compiled a 5-5 record with a team-low 4.83 ERA and 54 strikeouts in 63.1 innings pitched.
HOME RUN KING
Andrew Patrick belted two long balls in WSU's weekend sweep of Milwaukee to become the program's single-season school record holder in home runs with 17. He bested the previous record of 16 shared by Nick Shields (2001), Bryan Vickers (2004), and Gehrig Anglin (2022).
CONFERENCE STANDINGS
Wright State sits atop the Horizon League with a 21-6 record, followed by Northern Kentucky and Oakland in a tie for second at 16-11. Youngstown State (11-15) and Milwaukee (10-16) are batting the fourth spot in the standings, while Purdue Fort Wayne is last at 6-20. The top-two seeds will receive a day-one bye at the upcoming Horizon League Baseball Championship.Â

Andrew Patrick has placed himself into contention for Horizon League Player of the Year. He is slashing .340/.433/.716 with 17 doubles, three triples, 17 homers, 49 RBI, 60 runs, and 25 stolen bases in 51 games as Wright State's primary leadoff hitter. The Hilliard, Ohio native leads the conference in home runs, multi-homer games (4), runs scored, stolen bases, total bases (141), and games with three-plus hits (10) while ranking second in slugging percentage (.716), OPS (1.149), hits (67), doubles (T-2nd), and triples (T-2nd).
