Raiders make short trip to Columbus for weekend action

DAYTON — The Wright State volleyball team doesn't have to travel far for weekend competition, as the Raiders will make the short drive over to Columbus to take part in the Sports Imports Classic, hosted by Ohio State, Friday through Sunday. Wright State opens action on Friday afternoon against Buffalo before a Saturday matchup with Miami (FL) and the Raiders close the weekend with a Sunday meeting against host Ohio State. All three of this weekend's matches can be seen on BIG+.

LAST TIME OUT
Wright State hosted the Tru by Hilton Dayton Beavercreek Invitational, grabbing a win over UMBC while falling to Dayton and Bowling Green. Mya Ayro led the Raiders with 36 kills over the 10 sets while Sam Ott tallied 30 kills of her own. Lauren Yacobucci passed out 106 of the Raiders' 125 assists over the weekend, with Jenny Wessling collecting 41 digs to lead the back row defense. 

CLOSE TO HOME
Wright State plays its third straight weekend tournament in the state of Ohio as the Raiders take part in the Sports Imports Classic The Raiders opened the season in Athens at the Bobcat Invitational, going 3-0 with a trio of sweeps over Appalachian State, Xavier and Ohio before opening the home schedule last weekend against Dayton, UMBC and Bowling Green, going 1-2. Following this weekend's action, Wright State's next four matches to close September will all be outside the state of Ohio. 

MYA, MYA, MYA
Mya Ayro has gotten off to a strong start in her Raider career, opening the year with six double-digit kill efforts as she leads the Wright State lineup with her 78 kills and 4.11 kills/set average. She had a pair of 15-kill efforts in wins over Xavier and Ohio and enters the weekend with a .206 hitting percentage through 19 sets.

KNOW THE FOES
- Buffalo is 3-4 on the season, dropping three matches last weekend. Buffalo opened the season with a four-set win against HL foe Oakland. Buffalo finished 23-9 overall with a 13-5 MAC record a season ago, and will face off against the Raiders for just the third time, with Wright State winning the previous meetings in 1997 and 2008.
- Miami (FL) has opened the season 5-0 and is coming off a five set win at Texas last weekend. Miami recorded an 18-12 overall record with a 10-8 mark in the ACC last season. Wright State and Miami have never faced each other on the volleyball court.
- Ohio State has started 2024 3-2 and is coming off a four set loss at Florida. Ohio State was 11-18 overall with an 8-12 Big Ten record last season. Wright State and Ohio State have previously met 10 times, with the last matchup coming in 2001 with the first meeting back in November 1976. 

NATIONALLY SPEAKING. . .
Wright State begins the weekend with a 14.58 kills per set average, currently No. 6 nationally, while the Raiders' 38.37 team attacks per set are No. 14 in the country. Wright State is averaging 13.42 assists per set, ranked No. 11 nationally, aided in large part to Lauren Yacobucci's 11.21 assist per set average, which is No. 8 in the country.
