Raiders set to host tournament action in McLin this weekend

DAYTON — The Wright State volleyball team is set to play at home inside McLin Gymnasium this weekend as the Raiders play host to the annual Tru by Hilton Dayton Beavercreek Invitational Friday-Sunday. The Raiders will play one match each day, taking on the University of Dayton on Friday night at 6 p.m. before facing UMBC Saturday at 6 p.m. and wrapping up the weekend with a 3 p.m. Sunday contest against Bowling Green. Friday night's match against Dayton is expected to be streamed on ESPN+.

LAST TIME OUT. . . 
Wright State opened the season strong with three sweeps last weekend over Appalachian State, Xavier and Ohio. Mya Ayro led the way with 43 total kills, including a pair of 15-kill efforts, while Sam Ott had 33 total kills and notched her first double-double of the year in the win over Ohio. Reilly Zegunis (26 kills) had a pair of 10-kill matches and Elena Dubuc had 16 kills of her own over the opening nine sets of the year.

HORIZON LEAGUE LAUREN
Lauren Yacobucci was named Horizon League Player of the Week on Sept. 3 after she passed out 30-plus assists in Wright State's three sweeps to open the 2024 season, finishing with and 11.89 assists/set average with her 107 total assists in nine sets. She tallied 41 assists in Friday's opener against Appalachian State, the second-most assists of her career, before following that up with 32- and 34-assist efforts on Saturday. 

WELCOME HOME
Wright State opens its home schedule this weekend against Dayton, UMBC and Bowling Green. The Raiders and Dayton have played each season recently dating back to the Spring 2021 campaign while Wright State and Bowling Green will meet for the second straight season. The Raiders and UMBC have only met once previously, way back in 1997.

DEFENDING THE HORIZON
Wright State was picked first in the Horizon League's preseason poll, tallying 99 points and nine of the 10 first place votes for the second straight season. The Raiders have been selected at the top of the preseason poll in four of the last five seasons dating back to the COVID-altered Spring 2021 campaign. 

KNOW THE FOES
- Dayton is 2-0 after the opening weekend of the season, with a five-set win over UNI and a sweep of FIU. The Raiders and Dayton have played each season recently dating back to the Spring 2021 campaign, opening the series in 1973, and have faced each other 62 times in the all-time series.
- UMBC dropped its first three matches of the season, falling to UC Davis, Purdue and Kansas State last weekend after finishing 17-8 overall last season. The Raiders and UMBC have only met once previously, a UMBC four-set win in 1997 neutral site action.
- Bowling Green began 2024 with a 1-2 weekend at home, grabbing a win over Chicago State before falling to Illinois and Cincinnati. Wright State and Bowling Green will meet for the second straight season after a four-set battle last September and have met 32 times overall dating back to 1974.

KILLIN' IT
As a group, Wright State averaged 16.00 kills per set over the opening weekend of action on the way to three sweeps. The Raiders finished with a a .245 overall team hitting percentage for the weekend.
