Raiders Open Series with Friday Doubleheader at NKU

DAYTON – The Wright State baseball team continues Horizon League play with a three-game series at Northern Kentucky starting with a doubleheader on Friday, April 4. Live stats will be available for all three games, while the doubleheader will stream on ESPN+.

Wright State is coming off a midweek loss at Xavier, falling 11-5 on Tuesday afternoon.

WSU recorded five runs on six hits, including a three-run homer by Cam Gilkerson in the fourth. The Raiders drew eight walks, were hit by a pitch once, and struck out five times. Starter Brayden Schoetzow took the loss, allowing six runs, four earned.

Northern Kentucky is currently 15-12 on the season, sitting tied for second in the Horizon League with a 5-4 conference record. The Norse recently took a midweek loss at Southern Indiana, falling 10-0. Last weekend, the Norse lost the series to Milwaukee, falling 13-3 and 11-8 before taking the finale 6-2.

This season, the Norse have tallied 55 doubles, 36 home runs, and eight triples, leading the league all-around in extra-base hitting. Josh Williams leads the league and ranks fourth nationally with six sacrifice flies on the season, while Tyler Shaneyfelt is No. 33 nationally with three triples.

NKU's pitching staff has posted a 6.89 ERA this season, ranking second in the HL. The Norse lead the league in strikeouts per nine innings (8.2) and are second in hits allowed per nine innings (10.12). Aaron Boster leads the HL and ranks No. 48 nationally with four wins on the season.

HISTORY VS. NORTHERN KENTUCKY
Since 1975, Wright State has led the all-time series against Northern Kentucky, 51-18. Last year, the two went 3-3 in the regular season, each winning the series 2-1 as the visiting team. NKU defeated the Raiders 10-6 in Horizon League Championship play.

Sophomore outfielder JP Peltier has been a force at the plate, ranking among the nation's top home run hitters. He is second in the Horizon League with 10 total homers and ranks No. 29 nationally in home runs per game (0.40).

HEAD COACH – ALEX SOGARD
Leading the charge for Wright State is head coach Alex Sogard, who has built a powerhouse program during his tenure. After leading the Raiders to a 32-24 overall record, earning their sixth HL Regular Season title, Sogard earned his fourth Horizon League Coach of the Year honor in 2024, becoming the first to do so in program history. Â

His Coach of the Year awards are not the only accomplishment Sogard achieved at WSU. In 2019, Sogard took the Raiders to a 42-17 record, tallying the most wins by a first-year head coach in program history. Sogard led the Raiders to three consecutive NCAA Regional appearances, 2021-2023, being named the 2021 ABCA/ATEC East Coach of the Year. In June 2021, Sogard was named to the 2021 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team coaching staff.

The Raiders remain on the road, playing two games in the annual Joe Nuxhall Classic at Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio. Wright State will take on Cincinnati on Tuesday, April 8 at 6 p.m. and will wrap up the tournament on Wednesday, April 9, with the opponent and time to be determined.
