Volleyball Defeats Youngstown State

The Wright State volleyball team broke its 10-match losing streak Saturday at the C.J. McLin Gymnasium, but not without a struggle as Penguins pushed the Raiders to the limit before WSU won the match 30-25, 27-30, 30-20, 31-33, 15-6.

WSU hit .293 in winning game one, but slipped to .149 in game two as the Penguins held on for the win. The Raiders then hit .323 in game three and led 29-27 in game four, but then Youngstown State outscored Wright State 6-2 to force the decisive fifth game.

The Raiders controlled game five by scoring the first eight points and nine of the first 10, including three kills from Lisa Griffith.

For the match, Wright State led in kills 82-65, hitting percentage .264-.189 and aces 11-4.

Two Wright State players posted career highs as Griffith had her best match ever as a Raider with 19 kills and a .548 attack percentage. Nicole Scheltema had a career-high 72 assists to go along with 12 digs.

Two other Raiders recorded double-doubles as Sarah Poling had 21 kills and 14 digs while McKenzie Tiffin had 19 kills and 20 digs.

WSU, now 4-21 overall and 2-8 in the Horizon League, returns to action next weekend in the Badger State as the Raiders travel to UW-Green Bay on Friday, November 5, at 8:00 Eastern and UW-Milwaukee on Saturday, November 6, at 5:00 Eastern.
