Nahrgang Relieved As WSU Softball Coach

Sheila Nahrgang, the head softball coach at Wright State University the past 12 seasons, has been relieved from that position effective immediately, WSU Athletics Director Dr. Michael Cusack announced today.

"While we are disappointed in the progress of the team, we appreciate the integrity and values Sheila has brought to the program," Cusack said. "She has been an excellent representative of the university and we wish her well in whatever she chooses to do in the future."

Since taking over the Raider softball program in 1993, Nahrgang has posted a 235-333-4 record. Her teams had four winning seasons in five years between 1997-2001, including a school record 36 wins in 2000, when she was named Horizon League Coach of the Year.

Last year, after finishing eighth in the Horizon League standings, the team accomplished the impossible by going 4-0 in the conference tournament to earn the first Division I softball bid in the school's history. They continued the magic by becoming the first eighth seed to win a game when they defeated Missouri in the regionals at Ann Arbor, Michigan.

During Nahrgang's tenure, five players have been named to the All-Great Lakes Region team, 49 have received conference honors and, in 2001, Maria Barhorst was honored as a Third Team Academic All-American.

According to Cusack, a small advisory group will be formed immediately to assist in the selection of a new coach.
