Like all programs across the country, the Wright State softball team saw its 2020 season cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The COVID-19 pandemic has shaken the sports world and collegiate softball was no exception. NCAA President Mark Emmert and the Board of Governors announced the cancelations of all remaining winter and spring NCAA championships on March 12 and the Horizon League followed on March 16 with the announcement of the cancelation all remaining competition through the remainder of the academic year, officially closing the books on the Raiders season with an abrupt ending.
Under the direction of third year head coach
Laura Matthews, the Raiders tallied a 7-11 overall record in 2020, while going 6-8 in true neutral site games. The shortened campaign meant that Wright State ended up playing all 18 of its contests on the road away from home.
"We were obviously devastated about our season being cut short, but we were able to make some big strides as a team over the last few weeks of the season," Matthews said. "I'm really proud of the women in our program who came together and started to play really good softball and move the culture of our program forward."
"I want to especially commend our seniors, Lauren Bree and Bekah, for all they've done for our programs," Matthews added. "They deserved so much more out of their senior season and should be very proud of what they're done as Raiders."
In the 18-game season, Wright State covered nearly 3,000 miles. The Raiders dropped their first five contests of 2020 in Macon, Georgia before wrapping up what turned out to be their final games in Tempe, Arizona as they took part in the Arizona State University (ASU) Invitational.
Wright State recorded its first win of the season during the Huddle House Classic hosted by UT Martin as they defeated future Horizon League opponent Purdue Fort Wayne 3-2 on February 22 and went on to drop just one contest over the two-day span.
During the ASU Invitational, the Raiders handed Nebraska a 6-4 defeat on March 6 before run-ruling New Mexico State 11-1 later that same day.
