Box Score 2 The Wright State softball team held the early lead in both games, but could not hold on as the Raiders dropped a pair of games Saturday at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas. WSU lost to #7 and 2006 College World Series participant Oregon State 9-2 and fell to Cal Poly 9-1.
Wright State took the early lead against Oregon State with a run in the bottom of the first. Jherica Williams was hit by a pitch to start the inning and after Mary Jane D'Arcy hit into a force play, Kristen Bradshaw doubled to right center to put runners on second and third. Allison Cox followed with a sacrifice fly to center to plate D'Arcy with the first run.
Oregon State, however, responded in a big way in the top of the second, sending 10 batters to the plate in scoring seven times, including back-to-back home runs by Alana Ford and Mia Longfellow.
The Raiders added a run in the third. Singles by Williams and D'Arcy along with a Bradshaw walk loaded the bases and Cox drove in Williams by hitting into a force play at third.
Oregon State tacked an unearned run in both the fifth and seventh to round out the scoring.
Williams had two hits to pace the Wright State offense while Cox allowed no earned runs in 5.2 innings of relief.
WSU again scored in the first inning against Cal Poly. Briauna Birl and D'Arcy started the game with singles and each moved up a base on a Bradshaw sacrifice. After Cox walked, Melanie McInally hit into a force out at third as Birl came in to score.
The Mustangs, though, went in front to stay with four runs in their half of the first, the key blow being a three-run homer off the bat of Krysten Cary, and extended the lead with three in the third and two more in the fifth.
Wright State, now 0-4 on the season, concludes play at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic Sunday with two more games, taking on Portland State at noon and UCLA at 2:30 Eastern.
