Baseball Takes Series Finale From Cleveland State, 6-4

Box Score

The Wright State baseball team outlasted visiting Cleveland State for a 6-4 victory on Sunday afternoon at Nischwitz Stadium. The Raiders were led by senior lefthander Kyle Kearcher, who garnered his fourth win of the season, and Jason Bennion came on to close out the game for his third save.

The Vikings tallied runs in the first inning to take an early lead on the host Raiders, using an RBI double and RBI single to race out to a 2-0 advantage.

The Raiders added a run of their own in the first inning when Ross Oeder took the first offering from CSU starter Dylan Henry and sent it over the left field fence. The leadoff home run was the second of the season for Oeder, who also smacked one at Ole Miss.

In the second inning, the Raiders tallied three runs to take a 4-2 lead in the contest. John Kopilchack drove in an RBI with a double and Dan Biedenharn's two-RBI single broke the tie and put WSU in the lead for good.

Wallace Richardson opened the scoring in the third inning with a solo home run off of Kearcher to cut the Raider lead to 4-3.

WSU would respond with a run of their own in the fifth inning to extend their lead to 5-3. Biedenharn doubled to open the inning and moved to third on a sacrifice hit by Jeremy Hamilton. After a walk to Justin Parker, CSU relief pitcher Brandon Hewitt's pick off attempt sailed into the right field bullpen and Biedenharn crossed the plate.

CSU would tally on their final run in the sixth inning on a John Westra home run to left field, but WSU would add an insurance run in the seventh on an RBI double from Justin Parker to cap the scoring.

Kearcher threw six innings and allowed four runs in his fifth start of the season. The senior struck out two, improving to 4-1 overall, and didn't issue a walk in the contest. Jason Bennion threw the final inning to collect his third save of the season.

Offensively for WSU, Biedenharn collected three hits on the day, scored twice and drove in a pair of RBI's. Nick Allsop, Kopilchack and Oeder each collected two hits, as the Raiders outhit CSU eleven to nine.

The next action for the Green and Gold will be on Tuesday, March 27, against Bowling Green. The Raiders and Falcons will take to the field for a 5:00 start at Nischwitz Stadium.
