Box Score 2 The Wright State softball team led just once the entire day as Butler took both ends of a Horizon League doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the WSU Softball Field, the Bulldogs winning 5-1 in the opener and 7-4 in the nightcap.
Butler used a four-run third to take control in the first game, the key blow being a three-run double down the left field line off the bat of Amy Hyerczyk. The Bulldogs added another run in the fourth before Wright State got on the scoreboard in the fifth as Jherica Williams hit a sinking line drive for a single to center and circled the bases as the hit went by the center fielder to the fence.
The Raiders posed a major threat in the seventh as they loaded the bases with no outs on walks to Jamie Perkins and Erica Schroeder along with a Kristen Farley hit to left. WSU, however, could not push across a run as pinch-hitter Dana Boehmer fouled out and Danielle Philen lined into a double play to end the game.
Kristen Bradshaw paced the Wright State offense in the opener with two hits.
In the second game, the Raiders took a 1-0 lead with a run in the third as Williams walked and Briauna Birl followed with a chopper that went by the shortstop and split the left and center fielders for a triple to drive in the run.
Butler (13-10, 2-0 Horizon), however, went in front to stay with three in the fourth, two coming on a Melissa Shofroth double, added two more in the fifth on a Jenny Jacobs home run to left and tacked on two unearned runs in the seventh.
Like the first game, the Raiders would have a rally in the late innings as the Raiders scored once in the sixth on back-to-back doubles from Bradshaw and Michelle Logan and added two more in the seventh as Williams had a RBI double and later scored on a wild pitch.
WSU had the potential tying run at the plate with one out in the seventh, but could get no closer as Kristen Malinkey earned her second save of the day with a strikeout and a fly out.
Wright State, now 11-16 overall and 0-2 in the Horizon League, wraps up the three-game set with the Bulldogs Sunday with a single game at 1:00.
