Box Score 2 The Wright State softball team competed in the bronze bracket of the Buzz Classic in Woodstock, Georgia, Sunday. The fifth-seeded Raiders defeated fourth seed Gardner-Webb 10-3 before falling to top seed Centenary 8-3 in the semifinals.
WSU jumped out to an early 4-0 lead with single runs in the first and third and two more in the second. Allison Cox, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, accounted for the runs in the first and third with a sacrifice fly and double to right center, respectively, while the two runs in the second came on a fielder's choice off the bat of Briauna Birl and a sacrifice fly by Jherica Williams.
After Gardner-Webb scored a run in the bottom of the third, the Raiders answered with two in the top of the fourth as Kristen Bradshaw singled in Malerie Klingler and Birl.
Wright State then put the game out of reach in the seventh with three runs, the first two coming on hit to right by Jamie Perkins and the third on a Klingler single through the left side.
Perkins picked up her first collegiate win as she struck out six in six innings of work. Bradshaw led the WSU offense with three hits and two runs scored while Klingler also had three hits and two runs scored and Perkins chipped in two hits and a run scored.
Centenary took the lead in the semifinals with two in the second, but Wright State cut the deficit in half with a run in the third as, with two outs, Williams doubled to center and scored on a Michelle Logan single through the left side.
Centenary, however, added another run in the fourth and broke the game open with five in the fifth. The Raiders took advantage of an error to tack on a run in the sixth and added one more in the seventh on another RBI hit by Logan.
Williams had three hits in the game to pace Wright State.
The Raiders, now 3-9 on the season, head to Morehead State next weekend for two games each against the Eagles and Oakland.
