The Wright State baseball team honored their ten seniors and sent them off in grand fashion with a comeback victory against UIC. The Raiders dropped game one 14-5, but rallied late to post a 6-5 victory in game with J.C. Ramatowski driving in the game winning RBI's in the eighth inning.
In game one the Raiders fell behind in the third inning when UIC broke through with three runs off of WSU starting pitcher Garret Holleran. The Flames used an RBI single from Jake Carr and a two-run home run from Micky Pingree to take an early 3-0 lead.
Holleran threw three innings in the start and allowed three runs on three hits. The senior falls to 4-6 overall this season and struck out three Flame batters in the game.
The Flames added three more runs in the fifth inning off of WSU's Alex Kaminsky, as Pingree pushed the first run across the plate with an RBI single. Larry Gempp, Jr. followed that with an RBI groundout and Brett Schaffer plated the final run with a single.
The Raiders tallied their first run of the game in the fifth inning when J.C. Ramatowski led the inning off with a double down the left field line. Nick Allsop then hit a fly ball to left field, which was dropped by the Flames left fielder, putting runners on second and third. Sam Mote grounded out to drive in the RBI and cut the UIC lead to 6-1.
Kaminsky threw two innings and allowed three runs on four hits in his ninth appearance of the season. Jordan Wolfe threw the sixth and seventh inning scoreless, allowing WSU to close the gap.
In the seventh inning, WSU sent nine batters to the plate and scored four runs to pull the score within 6-5. Casey McGrew each tallied RBI's in the inning as well.
The Flames scored eight runners in the next two innings to post the 14-5 victory in game one.
In game one, three Raiders collected multiple hits as Parker was three-for-four with two RBI's and a run scored. Ramatowski and McGrew each collected a pair of hits and Mote drove in two RBI's in the game.
The Flames again jumped out to an early lead when Jon Brown smacked a home run off of WSU's starter Erich Schanz.
The Raiders struck with a run of their own in the first inning as Dan Biedenharn fielders choice. Shoup then tripled to deep center field to plate Biedenharn and tie the game at 1-1.
Schanz then loaded the bases with a pair of singles and a hit batter, striking out one batter, before walking in two runs in the inning.
Schanz was relieved to start the sixth inning by Greg Robinson after throwing five innings in the start. The senior allowed four runs on seven hits in the outing and struck out four, in the no decision.
The Green and Gold added an unearned run in the seventh inning as Oeder singled and moved to third on a Jeremy Hamilton single. An error on the UIC shortstop on a McGrew groundball extended the inning and allowed Oeder to score and close the gap to 4-2.
Robinson and Scott Ruthven each threw a scoreless inning and Nate Stevens allowed one run in his inning of work. Stevens was the winning pitcher in game, improving to 3-0 on the season, striking out one batter in an inning of work.
The Raiders mounted their comeback in the eighth inning and took the lead with four runs in the inning on UIC reliever Andrew Davis. The first three Raiders reached base and Nick Mahon knocked in the first RBI of the inning with a single. Oeder drove in an RBI and Ramatowski drove in the eventual game winning runs with a single through the left side.
Jason Bennion came on in the ninth to retire the side in order to collect his seventh save of the season.
The Raiders are now 34-20 overall and posted a 21-9 record in the Horizon League. The 34 wins are the most by a WSU team since 1994 and the 21 league wins sets a school record. The Raiders head into the Horizon League Tournament as the #2 seed and will play their first game on Thursday, May 24, at 3:00.
