Men Pull Away for Win Over Youngstown State

Box Score

It was a one-point game with 7:39 remaining, but Wright State closed the game with a 17-7 run as the Raiders posted a 66-55 decision over the Youngstown State Penguins in Horizon League men's basketball action Thursday night at the Nutter Center.

The Penguins led 20-18 following a Mel Johnson three with 8:42 left in the first half, only to see Wright State respond with a 12-4 burst over the next six minutes, eight of those coming from Vaughn Duggins, including two three-pointers. WSU led by as much as seven twice down the stretch before a desperation three at the buzzer by Byron Davis trimmed the halftime margin to 35-31.

The Raiders again went up seven at 43-36 on two Scottie Wilson free throws at the 14:35 mark, but YSU gradually chipped away at the deficit and trailed by just one at 49-48 on a Johnson jumper with 7:39 to play.

Jordan Pleiman, though, answered with two foul shots on Wright State's next possession and baskets from Wilson and Pleiman again put the Raiders up seven.

Youngstown State could get no closer than five the rest of the way as Wright State put the game of reach by scoring nine straight points over a four-minute span, which included another Duggins three and two more Pleiman layups.

Despite WSU shooting 48 percent compared to 43 percent for the Penguins, both teams finished with 23 field goals overall and five three-pointers. The difference, though, came from the foul line as the Raiders hit 15 of 22 attempts to just four of 11 for Youngstown State.

Pleiman recorded a near double-double of 16 points, 14 of those coming in the second half, and eight rebounds while Duggins also had 16 points, 11 in the first 20 minutes, along with five assists. Wilson added 10 points and seven boards, Todd Brown nine points and Will Graham six points, six rebounds and five assists.

John Barber had 13 points and eight rebounds while Davis also had 13 points to go with five assists for Youngstown State (6-9, 2-3 Horizon). Jack Liles added 10 while Johnson had eight off the bench.

Wright State, now 9-5 overall and 2-3 in the Horizon League, hosts Cleveland State Saturday night starting at 7:00.
