Men Hold Off UIC 76-75

Box Score

Wright State tied a school record with 13 three-pointers and needed every single one of them as the Raiders built a 11-point lead in the second half before holding on down the stretch for a 76-75 Horizon League win over the UIC Flames at the UIC Pavilion Thursday night.

It was all UIC in the early going as the Flames jumped out to a 13-4 advantage just 3:28 into the contest. UIC was still up 27-20 before the Raiders went on a 12-2 run, capped off by threes from Vaughn Duggins and Scottie Wilson, to take the lead for the first time at 32-29 with 5:49 remaining in the first half.

The Flames went back in front 38-36 on a Karl White, Jr. layup with 38 seconds remaining, but Troy Tabler connected on a three 25 seconds later to give Wright State a 39-38 edge at the half.

Threes by Todd Brown and Duggins along with a pair of Jordan Pleiman layups helped WSU build a 49-42 advantage three minutes into the second half and the margin eventually grew to 58-47 at the 13:59 mark on threes from Ronnie Thomas and Tabler.

Another White layup allowed the Flames to cut the deficit to 62-61 with 9:33 left and UIC drew to within one on three other occasions before regaining the lead at 72-71 at the 1:15 mark on a Josh Mayo jumper in the lane.

Duggins, however, put the Raiders ahead for good with layup on the next possession and after a missed three attempt by the Flames, Brown connected on one to just beat the shot clock to make it 76-72 with 12 seconds left. Mayo hit a three at the buzzer to round out the scoring.

The Raiders shot 51 percent for the game overall, including 56 percent in the second half, and made 13 of 22 threes for 59 percent. The 13 threes ties the old school mark which was set on March 3, 1990 in a 112-94 win at Chicago State.

UIC shot 48 percent for the game, 52 percent the final 20 minutes, and was 11 of 22 from behind the arc.

Four Raiders scored in double figures, led by Duggins with 19 points while Brown had 13 points and six assists. Pleiman added 12 points and eight boards and Wilson had 10 points and six rebounds. Tabler chipped in eight off the bench.

Mayo paced all scorers with 21 for UIC (9-8, 3-3 Horizon) while White had 20 and Tori Boyd 11 off the bench.

Wright State, now 10-6 overall and 3-4 in the Horizon League, concludes its stay in the Windy City Saturday with an 8:00 Eastern matchup at Loyola.
