Men Drop Tough Decision at Green Bay

Box Score

Wright State shot just 34 percent from the field and could not overcome Green Bay going 16 of 20 from the foul line as the Raiders dropped a tough 52-49 decision to the Phoenix in Horizon League action Saturday night at the Resch Center.

The Raiders jumped out to a 12-5 lead seven minutes into the contest, but lost guard Vaughn Duggins for the rest of the game due to an injury at the 11:14 mark. WSU, though, still led 16-12 until the Phoenix scored six straight points to go in front, four coming from Ryan Tillema.

The two teams were then tied twice more in the half before Green Bay went up 23-21 at the break on two Cordero Barkley free throws with 57 seconds left. In all, the Phoenix made nine of 11 from the stripe over the first 20 minutes while the Raiders did not have an attempt.

Green Bay held a slight lead for much of the second half until WSU went back in front 43-42 following back-to-back Jordan Pleiman layups, the second coming with 5:46 remaining.

A Scottie Wilson jumper made the Raider lead three, but jumpers from Randy Berry and Mike Schachtner gave the Phoenix the advantage again at 46-45. A Todd Brown layup put Wright State back in front with 2:49 left, but that turned out to be the final lead of the night for the Raiders as Green Bay scored its final six points from the line in as many attempts.

WSU had one last chance to tie the game, but a three attempt by Cooper Land was blocked and Troy Tabler's three shot went off the rim as the game ended.

Green Bay shot 37 percent compared to 34 percent for Wright State, but the Phoenix was 16 of 20 from the line to just five of nine for the Raiders.

Brown led WSU with 24 points while Wilson added eight and Pleiman seven. For Green Bay (9-5, 3-1 Horizon), Tillema led the way with 17 points with Berry and Schachtner each chipping in eight.

Wright State, now 8-5 overall and 1-3 in the Horizon League, returns home next weekend to take on Youngstown State on Thursday, January 10, and Cleveland State on Saturday, January 12, with both games set for a 7:00 tip.
