Men Roll to Win Over Norfolk State

Box Score

For the second straight home game, the Wright State defense was on display Wednesday night at the Nutter Center as after holding Toledo to a school-record 35 points last week, the Raiders set another school record in limiting Norfolk State to just 12 first half points in rolling to a 66-43 win over the Spartans.

Both teams struggled at the start as the Spartans led 5-0 before WSU broke through on a Todd Brown three with 14:30 play in the first half. The Raiders trailed by three until five straight John David Gardner points kick started a 9-0 run to make it 15-9 at the 7:28 mark.

Corey Lyons connected on a three to break that string with 6:18 remaining, but that turned out to be the final points of the half for the Spartans as Wright State closed the period by scoring the final 14 points, six coming from Cory Cooperwood and five by Cooper Land, to go up 29-12 at the break.

The 12 first half points for Norfolk State is fewest ever given up by the Raiders in a half, eclipsing the 13 by Ohio Northern on December 27, 1974.

NSU hit just five of 24 shots in the first 20 minutes and missed both foul shot attempts while Wright State was eight of 26 from the field and nine of 10 at the stripe.

Norfolk State trimmed the deficit to 40-30 with 10:06 to play, only to see the Raiders put the game out of reach with a 21-6 run over the next eight minutes, including seven each from Cooperwood and Brown.

Wright State hit 11 of 20 shots in the second half to finish at 41 percent overall while the Spartans shot 32 percent for the game. The Raiders connected on 23 of 29 from the foul line compared to just four of eight for Norfolk State.

Cooperwood paced WSU with a season-high 19 points, tying his output at Arkansas-Little Rock on December 12, and eight rebounds while Brown and Scott Grote had 10 and nine ponts off the bench, respectively. In all, the Raiders led in bench points 27-6.

Lyons led Norfolk State (1-6) with 14 points.

Wright State (3-7) heads to Puerto Rico Thursday for the San Juan Shootout over the weekend. The Raiders start play on Saturday, December 20, against Oral Roberts starting at 5:15 Dayton time.
