Men Win Third Straight Over South Florida, 60-43

A 12-2 run to open the second half helped the Wright State men's basketball team to a 60-43 victory over Big East opponent South Florida at the San Juan Shootout on Sunday evening. Todd Brown got back on the scoring track with 15 points and WSU shot 42-percent from the floor in the victory.

In a low scoring first half the Raiders broke a 9-9 tie with a 12-5 run to end the half and lead by seven at the half. Todd Brown and John David Garner each scored five points in the opening stanza and WSU scored ten of their 21 points in the paint.

In the first half, the Green and Gold committed only five turnovers and the Raiders bench tallied seven points. As a team, WSU shot 30 percent, compared to 19 percent for South Florida.

Brown hit a jumper to open the second half to push the WSU lead to nine points and Cory Cooperwood converted a layup in transition and made a free throw to make the lead 26-14. A Gavin Horne free throw and a jumper from Brown made it a 29-14 game with 12:46 left in the second half.

South Florida (4-6) collected their first points of the game at the 12:07 mark, but layups from Cooper Land and Scott Grote pushed WSU's lead to a game-high 17 points with 10:55 remaining. South Florida used a 14-6 run – with all of those points coming from Jesus Verdejo – to trim the lead to only eight points with eight minutes remaining.

The Raiders closed the game by hitting 13 of 14 free throws and extended their lead back to 17 points as the final buzzer sounded. WSU connected on 42 percent of their shots from the floor and made 78 percent of their free throws to claim the victory over Big East member South Florida.

Brown scored a season-high 15 points and Gardner added 11 points and was four-for-four from the free throw stripe. N'Gai Evans added ten points, while Scott Grote scored four points, grabbed five rebounds and added ten assists off the bench.

The next game for Wright State – now 5-7 overall on the season – will conclude their stay at the San Juan Shootout on Monday, December 22 against Murray State at 3:00.
