Box Score Wright State got off to a fast start, but needed a 9-4 run over the final 2:15 to pull out a 55-51 Horizon League decision over the Loyola Ramblers Thursday night at the Nutter Center.
The Raiders hit five of their first six shots in jumping out to an 11-0 lead three minutes into the contest, but Loyola chipped away from there and went in front for the first time at 16-15 on a Justin Cerasoli three with 9:10 remaining in the first half.
Loyola later led 28-20 on a J.R. Blount foul shot at the 3:01 mark, but WSU closed the period with a 7-2 burst, including a Cooper Land three, to close the deficit to 30-27 at the break.
Neither team had more than a three-point lead for the first 19 minutes of the second half, a period that featured four ties and 11 lead changes. The Ramblers went up 47-46 on a Tracy Robinson runner at the 3:09 mark, only to see WSU regain the lead for good on a Will Graham layup with 2:15 to play.
A Duggins baseline jumper and a Todd Brown foul shot made it 51-47 and another Duggins jumper that bounced twice off the rim before going in along with two Graham free throws extended the margin to 55-49 with 16 seconds left.
The Raiders controlled the statistics as they hit 20 of 40 shots overall, including six of 16 from three-point range, went nine of 11 from the foul line and had a 37-27 rebounding advantage compared to 36 percent shooting for Loyola, who was four of 20 from behind the arc and seven of 16 from the stripe.
Duggins paced all scorers with 20 for the Raiders while Graham scored a career-high 17, 11 coming in the second half, as he hit six of seven shots and went four for four from the foul line.
Young led Loyola (9-15, 5-9 Horizon) with 13 off the bench while Blount had 10.
Wright State, now winners of nine straight to improve to 18-6 overall and 10-4 in the Horizon League, hosts UIC on Saturday at 7:00.
