Box Score Wright State led by just one at the break, but pulled away the final 20 minutes for a 60-51 Horizon League win over the Detroit Titans Friday night at Calihan Hall.
A N'Gai Evans three at the 12:36 mark of the first half gave WSU the lead for good at 9-7, but the Raider advantage would be no larger than five the rest of the period as a basket by Detroit's Thomas Kennedy with just over a minute remaining made it 25-24 at the break.
Wright State extended the lead to 35-25 with a 10-1 run over the opening 5:38 of the second half, seven of those coming from John David Gardner, and a layup from the junior guard at the 8:11 mark gave the Raiders their biggest lead of the night at 49-33.
Six straight points drew the Titans to within nine at 56-47 with a minute remaining, but Detroit would get no closer as Gardner would make three foul shots and Todd Brown one down the stretch.
The Raiders hit 11 of 19 shots for 58 percent the final 20 minutes to finish at 47 percent overall while Detroit shot 48 percent in the second half to end up at 44 percent. WSU was 12 of 19 from the line compared to just three of nine for the Titans and led in bench scoring 24-11.
Gardner paced Wright State with 17 points, 12 in the second half, while Brown had 14 and Scott Grote added 10 off the bench, all coming in the final 20 minutes. Evans came off the bench to chip in nine.
Kennedy led Detroit (4-12, 0-7 Horizon) with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds while Eulis Stephens had 12.
Wright State (10-8, 4-3 Horizon), winners of 10 of its last 12, returns home for a pair of games next week, taking on Loyola on Thursday, January 22, at 8:00, followed by UIC on Saturday, January 24, at 7:00.
