Box Score After setting a school record for fewest points given up in a game earlier this season against Toledo, it took just 13 games to set a new mark as the Wright State defense held UIC to 26 percent shooting in defeating the Flames 57-31 in Horizon League men's basketball action at the Nutter Center Saturday night.
UIC jumped out to a 9-4 lead six minutes into the contest, six of those coming from Scott VanderMeer, but it was all Raiders from there as WSU outscored the Flames 19-4 the rest of the half, nine by Todd Brown, to go up 23-13 at the break
Both teams shot 30 percent for the half, but Wright State had 10 more attempts thanks to 11 offensive rebounds and forcing 12 turnovers while committing just seven, resulting in a 13-3 differential in points off of turnovers.
Brown kicked off the second half with a dunk, only to see UIC cut the deficit to 27-21 thanks to a pair of Josh Mayo threes. The margin was 34-25 following two Robo Kreps foul shots with 13:26 to play, but baskets from Scott Grote and Brown pushed the lead back into double figures to stay.
The Raider defense then held the Flames to one field goal and four points altogether over the final 8:30 as WSU closed the game with a 15-2 run, eight by N'Gai Evans.
The 31 points allowed eclipses the 35 given up against Toledo on December 9 and the 13 points UIC scored in the first half was one more than Wright State gave up versus Norfolk State on December 17.
The Raiders shot 54 percent in the second half to finish at 41 percent while the Flames hit just five of 22 attempts the final 20 minutes to end at 26 percent overall. WSU led in rebounds (36-29), points in the paint (24-12), points off of turnovers (21-8) and bench scoring (28-4).
Brown led all scorers with 23 points, the most for a Raider in any game this season, and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Troy Tabler added 10 off the bench and Evans had eight along with four assists.
VanderMeer paced UIC (10-9, 3-6 Horizon) with 10 points.
Wright State (12-8, 6-3 Horizon), winners of 12 of its last 14, heads to Northeast Ohio next weekend for a key two-game swing, taking on Youngstown State on Thursday, January 29, at 7:30, followed by Cleveland State on Saturday, January 31, also at 7:30.
