Box Score The Wright State men's soccer team couldn't hold off a solid effort from visiting Cleveland State on Saturday evening, falling 2-0 at Alumni Field. An interference call wiped a goal off the board for WSU early in the match and the Vikings connected on a marker in each half of the Horizon League tilt.
"It was a tough match to lose, but hats off to Cleveland State for converting on their chances," said head coach Bryan Davis. "We had opportunities, with two called back, and will need to finish those chances in the future. Those are the matches you would like to win, but we come away with some good things to show our players as we move forward this season."
The Raiders had the first great scoring chance of the match at the 2:09 mark when Braden Fleak took a shot that was saved by the CSU keeper. The keeper bobbled the ball and Brian Cothern swooped in to take control and knock the ball into the net. It looked as WSU had taken the early lead, but the official called interference on Cothern and the match remained scoreless.
Cleveland State (6-6-4, 3-1-2 HL) got the scoring started in the sixth minute when Admir Suljevic converted on a WSU turnover inside the 18-yard box. Suljevic knocked the shot in from 12 yards out for his third marker of the season at the 6:08 mark.
The Vikings would hold the 1-0 lead at the half and add to their lead in the 65th minute when Aaron Adkins notched the tally. After a misplay by the WSU defense near the PK box, Adkins corralled the ball and struck past a diving WSU keeper to give CSU a 2-0 lead at the 65:56 mark.
A second goal was erased when the Raiders Braden Fleak sent a shot into the far corner of the net that was called back on an offsides call in the 78th minute. Fleak would watch as a header sailed just wide late in the contest as the WSU offense turned up the pressure on the Vikings backline.
Cleveland State held a 10-9 edge in shots, while holding the edge in corner kicks 7-1. The Raiders, now 4-9-1 overall and 2-4-1 in Horizon League play, put three shots on goal in the match and were whistled for five offsides.
The next match for the Raiders will be their final home match on Wednesday, October 24, when they host Bowling Green on Senior Night. The Raiders and Falcons will take to the field for a 7:00 kickoff at Alumni Field.
