Box Score It was the defense that stepped up at the Nutter Center on Saturday evening, as the Wright State men's basketball team held Detroit to only four points through the first 12 minutes of the game on their way to a 61-48 victory. The Raiders held their opponent under 50 points for the ninth time this season and won their tenth Horizon League contest in the process.
Gavin Horne got things started the scoring following the opening tip with a right handed layup and Troy Tabler knocked in a three to push WSU's lead to 5-0. The lead would grow to double digits midway through the game when Todd Brown hit a pair of free throws to give the Raiders a 12-2 advantage.
The lead would reach 19 points at the tail end of the opening half when Scott Grote hit a pair of free throws with 42 seconds remaining. Detroit's Woody Payne hit a runner in the lane to close the half and Wright State led 32-15 at the end of the first stanza.
Brown paced the Raiders with 15 points in the first half – equaling the output of the Titans – as he hit five-of-six shots in the opening half and added three rebounds. Tabler knocked down a pair of threes in the opening frame and Grote was a perfect four-for-four from the free throw stripe in the opening 20 minutes.
The Green and Gold hit on 42 percent of their field goals in the first half (10-of-24), compared to five of 21 for Detroit. UDM held the edge on the boards, 18-12, while WSU forced 12 Titan turnovers in the opening frame.
The Raiders built a 24-point advantage just three minutes into the second half when Ronnie Thomas nailed a three pointer from the right wing to push the WSU lead to 41-20. The lead would hover around the 20-point mark throughout the game, before Detroit would close out the contest on an 11-4 run to account for the final margin.
Brown finished with 17 points – leading all scorers - and added three rebounds in the contest, while Will Graham chipped in ten points and dished out a game-high six assists. Thomas added nine points, with Tabler finishing the contest with eight.
WSU shot 40 percent for the game and held the Titans to a 35 percent clip from the field. Detroit outrebounded WSU 37-23, but the Raiders forced 22 turnovers and handed out 13 assists in the victory.
With the victory, the Raiders improve to 16-10 overall and 10-5 in the Horizon League. The next contest for the Green and Gold will be on Wednesday, February 18 at UIC starting at 8:00 Dayton time.
