Men Fall at UIC in Overtime

Box Score

Wright State held a three-point lead in the final seconds of regulation, but a Josh Mayo desperation three forced overtime and UIC outscored the Raiders 16-5 in the extra period as the Flames went on to a 77-66 decision in Horizon League action at the UIC Pavilion Wednesday night.

A Rob Eppinger three-point play gave the Flames a 21-14 lead with 9:33 to go in the first half, but WSU answered with a 16-6 run over the next seven minutes, including a pair of Cooper Land threes, to go up 30-27. UIC, however, closed the half by scoring the final seven points to take a 34-30 halftime advantage.

The Raiders shot 48 percent over the opening 20 minutes compared to 40 percent for the Flames, but UIC hit nine of 11 foul shots to just two of five for Wright State.

UIC again led by seven at 49-42 following a Spencer Stewart jumper with 8:46 to go in the second half, only to see WSU go on a 13-7 run over the next 5:30. Nine of those 13 points came from Todd Brown as the junior guard capped off the burst by hitting a three at the 3:16 mark to cut the deficit to 56-55.

A runner in the lane by N'Gai Evans put the Raiders up one with 2:16 remaining and following a three-point play from Brown at the 53.8 mark to make it 60-58, Scott Grote hit the first of two foul shots with 25.6 seconds left to extend the margin to three.

Grote, however, missed the second and after two desperation three-point attempts by the Flames, Mayo connected on a triple from the top of the key with two seconds to play to force overtime.

UIC then scored the first five points of the extra period, including a three-point play by Robo Kreps, and built on the lead from there as the Flames made four of five shots from the field and all eight attempts at the foul line.

Wright State shot 42 percent from the field for the game compared to 34 percent for UIC, but the Flames countered by going 25 of 27 at the foul line, making each of their final 23 attempts, while the Raiders were 14 of 21. UIC also held a 46-34 rebounding advantage.

Brown paced the Raiders with 23 points while Cory Cooperwood added 12 along with seven rebounds. Grote chipped in nine points off the bench and Land eight.

Jeremy Buttell posted a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds for UIC (13-14, 6-11 Horizon) while Stewart had 15 off the bench. Mayo and Kreps scored 13 apiece and Eppinger had 11.

Wright State (16-11, 10-6 Horizon) hosts Northeastern in a BracketBusters matchup on Saturday, February 21, starting at 11 am. The game will be televised nationally on ESPN2 and be available on ESPN360.
