Men Pull Out 65-64 Win Over Green Bay

Box Score

A N'Gai Evans layup with 9.2 seconds remaining gave the Wright State men's basketball team a thrilling 65-64 win over the Green Bay Phoenix in the regular season finale Saturday night at the Nutter Center.

Green Bay jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead, only to see the Raiders go up for the first time at 13-11 on a Todd Brown layup with 11:05 remaining in the first half. The Phoenix later led by six on two different occasions, but WSU tied the game at 24 on a Brown jumper and trailed just 27-26 on two Ronnie Thomas foul shots with a tenth of a second left.

Wright State shot 33 percent from the field over the opening 20 minutes compared to 37 percent for Green Bay.

The Phoenix again went up six at 41-35 on a Troy Cotton three at the 13:50 mark of the second half, but the Raiders responded with a 9-0 run, capped off by a steal and dunk by Brown. Neither team then had more than a two-point lead over the next nine minutes as there were three ties and the lead changed hands nine times.

A Brown three-point play with 59.9 seconds left gave WSU a 61-59 advantage and the Raiders looked to be in control as an over-and-back violation against the Phoenix resulted in two Scott Grote free throws at the 26-second mark.

Ryan Tillema, however, hit two from the stripe at the 20.6-second mark and following a steal, a three-point play from Cotton gave Green Bay the lead back at 64-63 with 15.9 seconds left.

That set the stage for the Evans winner as he drove along the right side of the lane and laid it in with 9.2 seconds to play.

The Phoenix had one last chance, but a rebound on a missed baseline jumper was knocked into the backcourt by Will Graham as the horn sounded.

WSU shot 52 percent from the field in the second half to finish at 42 percent overall while Green Bay hit for 50 percent the final 20 minute to end up at 44 percent. The Raiders went 12 of 15 from the line compared to seven of nine for the Phoenix and led in points in the paint (30-20) and points off of turnovers (22-10) as Wright State forced 16 turnovers while committing just 10.

Brown led Wright State with 19 points, 13 coming in the second half, while Thomas had 11, all but two coming in the first half. Cory Cooperwood, Troy Tabler and Grote each had eight, with Tabler's and Grote's contributions coming off the bench as the Raiders held an 18-0 advantage in bench scoring.

Tillema paced all scorers with 28 for Green Bay (22-9, 13-5 Horizon) while Cotton had 22, but no other Phoenix managed more than seven.

Wright State (18-12, 12-6 Horizon) now turns its attention to the Horizon League Tournament, which begins on Tuesday as the Raiders host an opponent to be determined later Saturday evening. Check wsuraiders.com for the latest updates.
