Men Pull Away for Win Over Valparaiso

Box Score

Wright State shot 52 percent from the field in the second half as the Raiders overcame a one-point halftime deficit in defeating the Valparaiso Crusaders 68-58 in Horizon League men's basketball action at the Nutter Center Thursday night.

Three Todd Brown three-pointers helped give WSU an 11-4 lead at the 16:37 mark of the first half, but the Raiders would go without a field goal for the next 10:47 until another triple from the junior guard made it 18-14.

Valparaiso went up 22-20 on an Erik Buggs three-point play with 3:10 remaining, only to see Brown score seven more points in a two-minute span, including a tip-in for Wright State's lone two-point field goal of the first half, to give the Raiders a 27-23 advantage.

Back came the Crusaders, however, as they scored the final five points of the period on a three and layup by Howard Little to go up 28-27 at the break.

WSU shot just 25 percent over the opening 20 minutes, including one of 10 from inside the arc, while Valparaiso hit for 46 percent. The Raiders, though, were 10 of 14 from the foul line compared to five of seven for the Crusaders.

An Urule Igbavboa three and layup extended the margin to 33-27 in the opening minute of the second half, but Wright State answered with seven straight points, five coming from Scott Grote, to regain the lead at 34-33. A Logan Jones jumper put Valpo back in front until the Raiders took the lead for good with a 10-2 run over a two-minute span.

The Crusaders trimmed the margin to 56-51 on a De'Andre Haskins basket with 4:20 to play, but would get no closer as back-to-back Cory Cooperwood scores pushed the lead back to nine and the Raiders were up as much as 13 in the closing seconds.

WSU shot 52 percent in the second half to end up at 39 percent on the night while Valparaiso connected for 32 percent the final 20 minutes to finish at 38 percent. The Raiders were 23 of 42 from the line compared to 11 of 18 for the Crusaders.

Brown led Wright State with a double-double of 20 points, 18 coming in the first half, and 10 rebounds while Cooperwood had 12 points, 10 in the second half, and Graham 11, all but three after halftime. Grote chipped in nine off the bench and N'Gai Evans eight as the Raider reserves outscored the Valpo bench 25-10.

Igbavboa paced all scorers with a double-double of 21 points and 14 boards for Valparaiso (6-17, 3-9 Horizon) while Little had 14.
