Box Score The Wright State baseball team couldn't push the runs across when they needed to in a 4-3 loss to Butler in game two of a double-header on Friday. The Raiders stranded seven base runners in the game, while committing two costly errors in the field.
The Raiders took an early 1-0 lead on a Jeff Mercer RBI single through the right side, scoring Casey McGrew from second base. The Bulldogs (4-17, 2-3 HL) answered with three unearned runs in the top of the third inning to grab a 3-1 lead off of WSU starting pitcher Alex Kaminsky.
The Raiders tallied single runs in the fourth and the sixth innings, both coming off the bat of Jake Hibberd. In the fourth, Hibberd grounded out to push a run across and a triple in the sixth plated WSU third run. Butler tallied a run in the top of the sixth and WSU entered the late innings trailing 4-3.
Kaminsky tossed six innings in the contest and allowed four runs – only one earned – while striking out a career-high nine batters in the loss. The junior didn't walk a batter and handed the ball to Jordan Marker to start the seventh. Markers struck out the side in the seventh and retired two batters in the eighth before giving way to Michael Schum, who struck out the final batter to hold the deficit at 4-3.
The Raiders couldn't cash in the eighth or ninth, as Ryan Kruszka tossed the complete game for the victory. WSU stranded runners in base in six straight innings, including five runners in scoring position.
Aaron Fields and Mercer each collected a pair of hits in the contest, with Mercer collecting an RBI in the contest. Hibberd collected a pair of RBI's and Quentin Cate scored a pair of runs in the contest.
The Raiders, now 11-14 overall and 3-2 in Horizon League play, and Bulldogs will conclude their series with a single game on Saturday, March 28, starting at 9:30 am. Michael Woytek will toe the rubber for Wright State, while Jamie Feldheiser is schedule to throw for the Bulldogs.
