Box Score The Wright State baseball team dropped an 8-7 decision in game two at Cleveland State on Saturday afternoon. The Raiders outhit CSU 15-12, but stranded 12 base runners, as WSU launched three home runs and the pitching duo of Jordan Marker and Michael Schum walked only one batter and struck out eight in the loss.
The Vikings took an early lead in the second game with a pair of runs off of Marker, the WSU starter, with an RBI single and RBI double in the frame.
The Raiders got their scoring started when Casey McGrew hit a solo home run in the third inning and R.J. Gundolff drove in an RBI with a single in the fourth inning to pull the Raiders even at 2-2.
After Tyler Winn hit a solo home run, Cate re-tied the game with his fourth home run in four games to right-center field. It was the 11th long ball of the year for the junior and tied the contest at 3-3 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.
Cleveland State tallied four more runs in the fifth inning off of Marker, before Michael Schum came on in relief, allowing only one inherited runner to score, and held the CSU lead to only 7-3.
Hibberd homered to lead off the sixth inning and the Raiders tallied three runs in the seventh to tie the game. In the seventh, Cate, Kory Twede each plated RBI's with base hits to pull even at 7-7.
The first two batters of the eighth recorded outs, but Cleveland State used a double and an RBI single from Wynn – his third of the day – to claim an 8-7 lead. WSU had a runner on second with two outs in the ninth, but a ground out closed out the contest in favor of the Vikings.
Marker tossed four innings and allowed seven runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts in the no decision. Schum threw the final four frames with four hits, one strikeout and one run allowed to fall to 3-5 on the season.
Cate collected four hits to extend his hitting streak 18 games and Gundolff extended his hitting streak to nine games with an RBI single. Twede, Hibberd and Garrett Gray each chimed in with a pair of hits, while McGrew belted out three hits in the loss.
The Raiders fall to 27-25 overall on the season and are 13-10 in Horizon League play heading into the final week of the Horizon League season. The Green and Gold will host Toledo on Monday, May 11, before closing out the regular season with a three-game slate against Cleveland State at Nischwitz Stadium.
