Box Score A pair of big innings doomed the Wright State baseball team as they dropped the second game of a double-header with Cleveland State on Saturday at Nischwitz Stadium, falling 12-6 in the nightcap. Five different players collected multiple hits in the contest and the Raiders outhit the Vikings 15-12, despite losing their second straight game.
Jeff Mercer drove in an RBI in the first inning was opened when Jeff Mercer single down the left field line. The Vikings would add a run in the top of the second and Gerald Ogrinc would push WSU ahead 2-1 with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second.
CSU's offense would collect nine runs over the next two innings – including six in the third – against a pair of WSU pitchers. Rylan Ostrosky tossed three innings and allowed seven runs, only two earned, in the start and Michael Woytek fanned six and allowed three runs in four innings of work.
The Raiders would scratch out a pair of runs in the fourth innings on a R.J. Gundolff, two-RBI double to left field and Quentin Cate would double in the seventh to plate the fifth WSU run.
An eighth inning solo home run from CSU would push the score to 11-5 in favor of the Vikings, but a Jake Hibberd solo homer in the home half of the frame cut into the lead. The Green and Gold would load the bases in the eighth but a pair of infield outs would end the threat.
Cleveland State (20-29, 12-13 HL) would tack on one more run in the ninth against WSU reliever Griffin Knapp to account for the final margin of 12-6.
Cate and Gundolff each had three hits in the contest- with both doubling and collecting a pair of singles – while Hibberd, Aaron Fields all collected two hits. Six different WSU players scored runs and all nine starters reached base safely in game two.
The Raiders finish the regular season with a 29-27 overall mark and a 14-12 league record. The seeding for the Horizon League Tournament will not be finalized until after the UIC/Valparaiso game is played in the afternoon tomorrow in Valparaiso, Indiana.
