Box Score The Wright State baseball team entered the ninth inning with a two run lead and closer Michael Schum on the mound, but, with two out and two on, a throwing error opened the door to a six-run inning for Canisius. The big inning was enough to send WSU to a 9-5 season opening loss to the Golden Griffins at the USA Baseball Complex Classic in Cary, North Carolina.
The Griffs got on the board in the bottom of the first inning when Sean Jamieson hit his first home run of the season. That lead last until the bottom of the frame, Aaron Fields each walked to start the games and both came around to score on a Tristan Moore single to center field.
The Green and Gold took a 3-1 lead when Gerald Ogrinc led off the second inning with a double and later came in to score on an Ashe sacrifice fly. Jamieson collected his second RBI in the third and Brian Burton pushed a run across in the fourth to knot the game at 3-3.
Wright State starting pitcher Alex Kaminsky gave WSU five solid innings of work in the season opener, but garnered a no decision. The senior fanned four batters and didn't walk anyone, allowing three runs – two earned – on four hits. Kaminsky handed the ball to Greg Robinson who worked a scoreless sixth frame to allow the Raiders to retake the lead.
WSU tallied a pair of runs in the sixth, scoring first when Moore walked, then moved to third on a Garrett Gray single and scored on a Jake Hibberd sacrifice bunt. Gray moved to second on the bunt and Ogrinc singled to give the home team a 5-3 lead.
After Robinson set the Canisius (1-0) lineup down in order in the seventh, sophomore close Michael Schum came on and tossed a scoreless eighth. The Raiders were unable to add to their lead and entered the ninth inning with the two run advantage.
A leadoff double was followed by a strikeout and an RBI single to pull the Griffs within one run. After a double put two runners on with one out, Schum (0-1) fanned his second batter and walked the left-handed hitting Jarred Flock to load the bases. The side-arming Schum then got a ground ball to Quentin Cate at third base, but an off the mark throw allowed two more runs to score. Three more runs would cross the plate for Canisius, pushing their lead to 9-5.
Wright State would put one runner on base, but Shayne Wilson collected three outs without letting a run cross the plate in the bottom of the ninth. Josh Marshall picked up the win with 2.1 scoreless innings of relief of starting pitcher Shayne Wilson.
Moore paced the Raiders at the plate with a single, three walks and a stolen base, to go along with a runs scored and two RBI's. Ashe scored a run and walked twice, while Ogrinc doubled for the only WSU extra base hit of the game.
Wright State falls to 0-1 on the season after dropping their season opener and will return to action on Saturday, February 20 with a doubleheader versus Le Moyne. The games will start at Noon at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.
