Baseball Splits at Cleveland State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Wright State baseball team was three outs from a sweep against Cleveland State Saturday, but the Vikings scored six in the bottom of the ninth to pull out an 8-7 win in the first game before the Raiders claimed the nightcap 21-11 in Horizon League action at the All Pro Freight Stadium in Avon, Ohio, Saturday afternoon.

CSU scored a run in the first inning of game one, but WSU responded with four unanswered runs over the next four innings. Gerald Ogrinc singled in a run to tie it in the second and Quentin Cate put the Raiders in front with a two-run home run to right in the third. Two innings later, back-to-back doubles from Jake Hibberd and Cate made it 4-1.

The Vikings tallied a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth, only to see Wright State extended its lead to 7-2 with three in the seventh. Two runs scored on RBI singles by Hibberd and Casey McGrew, with the third run coming on a balk.

It stayed that way until Cleveland State collected six hits in scoring six runs in the bottom of the ninth to pull out the win, the final three runs coming with two outs.

Hibberd and McGrew each had three hits in the opening game while Cate and R.J. Gundolff had two. Starting pitcher Casey Henn went the first seven innings, giving up two runs and scattering six hits while striking out nine.

The offense continued into the second game as the Raiders scored twice in the first on ground outs by Hibberd and Cate before the Vikings responded with a Bob Suitca three-run home run in their half of the frame.

Back came WSU with a pair of round trippers in the second to go up 5-3 as Aaron Fields two-run single, to make it 8-4.

Fields added a two-run triple in the fifth, but the Raiders still trailed 11-10 after six innings as Cleveland State scored five times in the fourth and two in the sixth.

Wright State, though, went in front to stay with six in the seventh, an inning that featured an Ogrinc two-run double and a Hibberd two-run single, and added five more in the eighth as Moore hit his second home run of the game, a two-run blast to center, and McGrew singled in two more.

Greg Robinson (2-1) picked up the win as he struck out seven in 3.1 innings of relief while Jordan Marker and Michael Woytek each pitched a scoreless inning to close out the game. Offensively, Moore was four-for-five, including the two home runs, with four RBI and four runs scored while Ogrinc had three hits, three RBI and four runs scored, Fields three hits, five RBI and two runs scored, McGrew three hits, three RBI and four runs scored and Hibberd two hits and three RBI.

Wright State (13-12, 4-2 Horizon) will compete this week in the Joe Nuxhall Classic, which will be hosted this year by Miami. The Raiders face Cincinnati on Tuesday at 3:00 and will take on either Miami or Xavier on Wednesday.
