Baseball Sweeps Butler

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Wright State baseball team improved to 3-0 in the Horizon League with a doubleheader sweep at Butler Saturday, winning the first game 9-5 before taking the second 18-5.

Garrett Gray gave the Raiders a 2-0 lead in the second with a two-run home run to right and a Quentin Cate groundout plated Tristan Moore with a run in the third.

Butler answered with a run of its own in the third, only to see Wright State break the game open with three in the fifth. R.J. Gundolff singled the first run in before Cate cracked a two-run home run to right.

The Bulldogs closed the deficit to 6-4 with three in the seventh before the Raiders responded with three of their own in the eighth on a Moore homer to right and a two-run Cate double.

Butler, though, scored a run in the ninth and had the potential tying run at the plate before Michael Schum struck out the lone batter he faced for the save.

Starter Casey Henn (3-0) earned the win for WSU with eight strikeouts in 6.1 innings. Offensively, Cate had three hits and drove in five while Moore and Ryan Ashe each had three hits.

Wright State scored four times in the first in jumping out to an early lead in game two and added two more in the fourth before exploding for six in the fifth, including a two-run Gray single.

The Raiders made it 18-2 with three in the eighth and two in the ninth before Butler rounded out the scoring with three in the bottom of the ninth.

Cate had five more hits, three RBI and four runs scored while Gray had three hits and four RBI. Aaron Fields also collected three hits.

Wright State (11-10, 3-0 Horizon) hosts Ohio Tuesday at 6:30 at Nischwitz Stadium.
