Men's Soccer Wins at Butler

Box Score

The men's soccer team clinched the #2 seed for next week's Horizon League Tournament with a 1-0 win at Butler in the regular-season finale Saturday.

The lone goal of the contest came at the 23:50 mark of the first half when Will McAteer headed in a corner kick by Gustav Svensson.  It was McAteer's third goal of the season and the first assist for Svensson.

The WSU defense took over from there as goalkeeper Craig Feehan picked up his fourth shutout of the season, recording eight saves in the process.

"Tonight was a great win for this program," said head coach Bryan Davis.  "Butler has a very talented group and really were dangerous.  There was a reason they were preseason ranked #1 in the Horizon League and they gave us all we could handle."

"I can't say enough about our effort," added Davis.  "They were up to the challenge and found a way to win.  I'm very pleased for these guys.  We didn't play our best game, though, and we certainly have a lot to improve on heading into the tournament next week."

With the win, Wright State (10-6-2, 5-2-1 Horizon) reached the 10-win plateau for the first time since finishing 10-10 in 2005.  The Raiders are also guaranteed of closing the year above the .500 mark since going 12-7-1 in 2001.

WSU finished in a tie for second with Cleveland State in the standings, but won the tiebreaker with its 2-1 overtime win over the Vikings at Alumni Field on September 27.  It marks the first time Wright State has placed second in the standings since going 5-1-1 in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference in 1998, a year that saw the Raiders advance to the conference championship match.

The Raiders will play in the first semifinal on Friday, November 11, at Brown Field on the Valparaiso campus and face the higher remaining seed out of the quarterfinals (either Cleveland State, Green Bay or UIC).
