Box Score 2 The Lynn Curylo era at Wright State got off to a successful start Saturday as the Raider softball team won both of its games at the Belmont/Hampton Inn-Brentwood Tournament in Columbia, Tennessee, defeating Austin Peay 3-1 and Belmont 13-2 in six innings.
WSU scored a run in the first inning against Austin Peay as Louie Haney reached on an infield single, stole second and scored as Justine Shilt also reached on an infield hit. The Raiders then made it 3-0 in the third as China Frost singled up the middle and Shilt, who ended up with three hits overall, followed with a two-run home run to right.
Austin Peay tallied an unearned run in the fourth, but that would be all that Krystian DeWitt, in her collegiate debut, would allow in five innings as she gave up just two hits and a walk while striking out six. Natasha Szlapetis, also making her collegiate debut, earned the save with two shutout innings, giving up one hit and a walk while fanning four.
In the second game of the day against host Belmont, it was scoreless until Wright State exploded with six runs in the third. Haney smacked a two-run home run to start the scoring and after Katie Kine drove in a run with a hit to left center, Colleen Schneider delivered the big blow, a two-out, three-run triple.
Shilt hit her second home run of the day, a three-run shot, to make it 9-0 in the fourth before the Bruins tacked on a pair of runs in their half of the inning.
Wright State, though, forced the run-rule with four in the sixth, including a RBI double from pinch-hitter Chelsea Archer in her Raider debut.
Haney earned the win, allowing just one hit in four innings while Chelsea Contant did not give up a hit or a run over the final two frames.
Offensively, Haney had three hits, two runs scored and two RBI, Frost three hits, Kine two RBI and two runs scored and Schneider four RBI.
Wright State (2-0) wraps up play at the Belmont/Hampton Inn-Brentwood Tournament with a pair of games on Sunday, taking on IUPUI at 11:00 Eastern followed by Austin Peay at 1:15 Dayton time.
