Box Score 2 The Wright State softball team won the Belmont/Hampton Inn-Brentwood Tournament title with two more wins on Sunday to improve to 4-0 on the season, defeating IUPUI 2-0 and Austin Peay 7-4.
It was a scoreless duel between pitchers Krystian DeWitt of WSU and IUPUI's Nikki Thomas until the Raiders batted in the bottom of the sixth. After China Frost reached on an infield single, Justine Shilt followed with a two-run home run to right, her third in as many games, to account for all the scoring.
DeWitt picked up her second win of the season and first career shutout as she limited the Jaguars to only two singles while striking out two. Shilt and Frost each had two hits to pace the WSU offense while Louie Haney added a double.
After scoring a run in the top of the second against Austin Peay on a RBI single by Brittany Waddell, Wright State trailed for the first time this season as the Governors scored three times in their half of the inning on a pair of home runs.
WSU, however, tied it with two runs in the fourth as Haney scored on an error and Shilt knocked in a run with a hit to left center.
The Raiders then went in front to stay with four more in the fifth. Kacie Rapshus started the frame with her first collegiate home run and after Lindsay Barrett reached on an infield hit, Katie Kine homered to make it 6-3. Haney later singled in Mollie Berry with the final run.
Austin Peay posed a threat in the seventh with a run and had the bases loaded with two out, but Natasha Szlapetis induced a force out to end the game and pick up her second save of the year.
Chelsea Contant (1-0) earned the win with 1.2 innings of scoreless, hitless relief with a strikeout. Offensively, Shilt had three more hits as she finished the weekend with nine hits in 12 at bats, three of those home runs, with nine RBI. Berry added two hits.
Wright State (4-0) returns to action February 25-27 at the Louisville Red Black Tournament, where the Raiders will face Miami, Boston University, Louisville and SIU Edwardsville.
