Box Score 2 The Wright State baseball team split a pair of games in the opening day of the Homewood Suites Shootout in Charleston, South Carolina, Friday, dropping a 3-2 decision to Old Dominion before defeating the host school, The Citadel, 5-2 for its first win of the season.
Old Dominion scored a run in the first before the Raiders tied it with a run of their own in the third. Ryan Ashe, who had two hits in the game, led off with an infield single and advanced to second on a bunt by Justin Kopale. One out later, Kody Krizman reached on an error by the second baseman as Ashe came in to score.
The Monarchs, however, went back in front with single runs in the fifth and sixth before WSU answered with a run in the seventh. After Corey Davis started the frame with a double to right, he moved up to third on a Zach Tanner groundout and scored on a wild pitch.
The Raiders posed a threat in the eighth as, with one out, Sam Picchiotti walked, Dan Marsh had a hit to left and both moved into scoring position on a Jake Hibberd ground out. Tristan Moore walked to load the bases, but Marsh was picked off of second to end the threat.
Casey Henn (0-2) was the tough-luck losing pitcher, allowing just three hits and two earned runs in 5.1 innings, striking out four. Jordan Marker gave up only one hit and a walk in shutting out Old Dominion over the final 2.2 innings, fanning two.
The WSU offense, after being held to just four hits against Old Dominion, came alive early against The Citadel, scoring five times in the second. Moore started the rally with a single to right and Davis followed with a double to right to put runners on second and third. Ashe reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases and Kyle Mossbarger had a hit to left to drive in Moore and Davis.
After a Bulldog error reloaded the bases, Krizman singled to left to plate Ashe and, two batters later, Marsh delivered a single through the right side to knock in Mossbarger to make it 4-0. Hibberd followed with another hit through the left side to plate the final run of the inning.
The Citadel scored a run in the third and one in the sixth, but would get no closer as senior righty Max Friedman picked up the win, allowing just one earned run in six innings in scattering five hits. Freshman Taylor Braun earned his first collegiate save by shutting out the Bulldogs over the final 2.2 innings, giving up three hits while striking out two.
Offensively, Marsh, Hibberd and Krizman each had two hits.
