Box Score 2 The Wright State baseball team completed a three-game Horizon League series sweep at Milwaukee by winning a pair of games Saturday at Henry Aaron Field, taking the first game 8-4 before rolling to an 8-0 victory in the nightcap.
The Raiders opened the first-game scoring with a run in the first on a Ryan Ashe ground out, only to see Milwaukee answer with two in its half of the inning. WSU tied it in the fifth on singles by Ashe, Sam Picchiotti and Dan Marsh, but again the Panthers regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth with a run.
WSU went in front to stay with three in the seventh. Picchiotti doubled in Ashe, who singled and went to third on a bunt and a wild pitch, and after Marsh walked, Tristan Moore delivered a two-out, two-run double to make it 5-3.
Milwaukee cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the seventh and it stayed that way until Wright State scored three insurance runs in the ninth. Two errors resulted in the first two runs and Ashe knocked in the third with a hit to center.
Picchiotti and Ashe both had three hits in the first game while Corey Davis and Zach Tanner each had two. On the mound, relievers Cody Kopilchack, Taylor Braun, Jordan Marker and Michael Schum allowed just one run and four hits over the final four innings with four strikeouts. Kopilchack (2-2) picked up the win while Schum earned his sixth save.
In the second game, Wright State starter Michael Woytek (5-2) was masterful over six innings, shutting out the Panthers on three hits, facing just two batters over the minimum. The strong pitching continued into the relief corps as Michael Meintel retired all six batters he faced, striking out two, while Braun allowed just a single in pitching the ninth, fanning one.
WSU scored twice in the second on an Ashe bases-loaded walk and a Justin Kopale RBI single and tacked on two more in the third on a Davis ground out and a Tanner single to drive in Jake Hibberd.
The Raiders rounded out the scoring with four in the sixth. Kopale doubled in Kyle Mossbarger, who walked, for the first run and after Picchiotti walked and both runners advanced on a wild pitch, both came in as Marsh had a hit up the middle. Moore later plated Marsh with another single up the middle.
Hibberd, Davis, Tanner and Kopale each had two hits in the nightcap to pace the offensive attack.
Wright State (24-12, 8-3 Horizon) takes on crosstown rival Dayton Tuesday at 6:30 at Nischwitz Stadium. It will be Military Night with all military ID's accepted for free admission.
