Box Score Wright State overcame an early 2-0 deficit as it tallied single runs in the first and second and then scored the game-winner in the eighth for a 3-2 Horizon League win over the Butler Bulldogs Thursday afternoon at the WSU Softball Field.
Butler (26-19, 12-5 Horizon) took advantage of four walks in scoring twice in the top of the first, only to see WSU answer with a run of its own in its half of the inning. With one out, Louie Haney singled to left and Justine Shilt doubled to left center to put runners on second and third. Lindsay Barrett then hit a comebacker that Bulldog pitcher Jenny Esparza tried to backhand, but could not come up with it as Haney scored.
The Raiders then tied with another run in the second. After Brittany Waddell walked and Mollie Berry reached on an infield hit, China Frost moved both runners up with a bunt. Haney walked to load the bases and Barrett was later hit by a pitch to force in the tying run.
It stayed that way until the eighth as the Bulldogs threatened in the third, but stranded two runners as Waddell made a running catch for the third out, and left two more on in the seventh.
In the decisive eighth, Kristi Boreing led off with a hit to left and went to second on a Waddell bunt. Berry singled into the hole at shortstop to put runners at first and second and Frost followed with a comebacker to Esparza, who looked towards third and then threw wildly pass first as Boreing scored the winning run.
Chelsea Contant (6-3) picked up the win for Wright State (19-24, 8-8 Horizon) with 7.1 shutout innings in relief, allowing just four hits while striking out two. Haney led the Raiders with three hits while Boreing and Berry each had two.
The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was suspended by rain in the top of the second with no score. That game will be resumed Friday at 11:00, followed by the regularly scheduled contest at 1:00.
