Box Score 2 After defeating Butler in eight innings on Thursday, Wright State won two more in its final at bat against the Bulldogs at the WSU Softball Field Friday afternoon, taking the opener 6-5 before claiming a 5-4 decision in the nightcap.
Game one of the day was a continuation of Thursday's second game, which was halted due to rain in the second inning. Butler quickly scored twice as play resumed and added another run in the third to go up 3-0.
The Raiders tallied a run in the fifth as China Frost singled, went to second on a Louie Haney bunt and came in to score on a Justine Shilt double to right center.
WSU then went in front with three in the sixth. Chelsea Archer led off with a walk and after Kristi Boreing reached on a bunt single, Brittany Waddell advanced the two runners with another bunt. Mollie Berry singled in Archer and as she stole second, a Bulldog throw in an attempt to get Boreing at third kicked away, allowing Boreing to score and tie the game at 3-3. Shilt's second double of the game later plated Berry with the go-ahead run.
Butler (26-21, 12-7 Horizon), however, answered right back in the seventh, scoring a pair of runs with two outs to take a 5-4 lead.
That set the stage for the bottom of the inning, which saw Wright State load the bases with no outs on hits by Archer and Boreing and a Waddell walk. An interference call on a foul fly to the third baseman retired Archer, but Berry walked to reload the bases.
Frost struck out for the second out, but Haney tied the game as she won a seven-pitch battle for a full-count walk to drive in Boreing and Shilt followed with another full-court walk to knock in Waddell with the winning run.
Krystian DeWitt (13-17) picked up the win with a complete-game effort, striking out seven. Offensively, Frost recorded three hits while Shilt had two hits to go along with three RBI. Archer, Boreing and Berry also notched two hits.
In the second game, it was WSU that held the early lead, scoring three times in the second after the first two batters were retired. A Boreing double and a Waddell looper into left resulted in the first run and after a Berry hit put runners on the corners, another Berry steal resulted in an error on a relay throw, this time allowing both Berry and Waddell to score. The Raiders added another unearned run in the sixth to go up 4-0.
After being shutout for six innings, the Bulldogs came all the way back to tie it in the seventh on a Jenny Esparza solo homer to left center, an error and a two-out, two-run single by Jessica Huey.
Wright State, though, scored the game-winner in the seventh. A Shilt hit to center, a walk to pinch-hitter Katie Kine and a bunt from pinch-hitter Liz Mathews put runners on second and third. Archer then hit a bouncer to second that took a funny hop, allowing Shilt to score and win the game.
Chelsea Contant (7-3) faced just one batter and threw three pitches in the seventh, but picked up the win in relief of DeWitt. Shilt, Boreing, Waddell and Berry each had two hits in the nightcap.
Wright State (21-24, 10-8 Horizon) hits the road for a weekend series at Detroit, starting with a doubleheader Saturday at 1:00.
