Box Score The Wright State men's soccer team pulled out its second straight 2-1 overtime victory Tuesday night, this time over Cleveland State in Horizon League action at Alumni Field.
The Raiders opened the scoring at the 10:29 mark of the first half as freshman Justin Laird tallied his fourth goal of the season, with Bryce Rockwell-Ashton recording his second assist of the year.
Cleveland State (2-6-1, 0-1-1 Horizon), though, came back and tied the game with just 7:07 remaining in regulation as Mike Derezic scored his first goal of the year on an assist by Manuel Conde.
WSU, however, needed just 2:04 in the extra period to claim the victory as sophomore Derek Zuniga drove a penalty kick into the right side of the net, his third goal of the season. The Raiders are now a perfect 5 for 5 on the season in penalty kicks, with Zuniga accounting for three of those.
"Cleveland State is a very good team and really gave us all we could handle," said head coach Bryan Davis. "I think Ali (Kazemaini) does one heck of a job with them. We took advantage of our opportunities, which for a young group shows progress."
"It's a long season and we still have a ton to improve on," added Davis. "We will get back to work tomorrow and we will continue to improve."
The Vikings held a 15-13 shot advantage, including a 12-4 differential in the second half, while the Raiders led 7-4 in corner kicks.
Wright State (6-2-1, 2-0 Horizon) continues the three-game homestand on Saturday, taking on Xavier at 7:00. That match will be the second of a doubleheader as the WSU women face nationally-ranked Milwaukee at 5:00.
