Baseball Splits Pair in North Carolina

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The baseball team split a pair of games Saturday in North Carolina, falling to Bryant 2-0 at the USA Complex in Cary before recording a 5-4 win at NC State in 11 innings.

In the Bryant game, all the runs came early as the Bulldogs scored once in the first and added an unearned run in the third.  The Raiders had two runners on base in the fifth, seventh and eighth innings, but came away empty each time.

Justin Kopale led WSU offensively with three hits.  On the mound, starter Cody Kopilchack allowed just one earned run in five innings while Andrew Elliott, in his Raider pitching debut, shutout Bryant over the final four frames, allowing just one hit.

The Raider offense cam alive early at NC State with two runs in the top of the second.  Garrett Gray led off with a single, but was erased on a Zach Tanner fielder's choice.  After Ryan Ashe was hit by a pitch, Sam Picchiotti tripled to right center to plate both Tanner and Ashe.

NC State tallied single runs in the third and fourth to tie it, only to see WSU go back in front with two in the sixth.  A Gray double and Ashe single produced the first run and Picchiotti drove in Ashe with a double down the left field line.

The Wolfpack, though, tied it again with two in the seventh and it stayed that way until Wright State scored the game-winner in the 11th.  With one out, Justin Kopale doubled to right.  One out later, Corey Davis delivered a hit to right to knock in Kopale.

It was left to Jordan Marker (1-0) from there and he did not disappoint, retiring the side in order in the 11th to close out the victory.  Offensively, Ashe had three hits while Jake Hibberd, Gray and Picchiotti each had two.

Wright State (1-2) wraps up the road trip Sunday morning with a 10:00 contest against Canisius at the USA Complex.
