Box Score 2 The Wright State softball team split a Horizon League doubleheader at Butler Tuesday, falling 5-1 in the opener before rallying for a 3-2 win in the nightcap.
Butler jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game one, scoring a run in the second and then adding three more in the fourth on an Alyssa Coleman three-run double.
The Raiders tallied a run in the fifth on three straight two-out hits from Angie Clark, Kristi Boreing and Chelsea Archer, but could get no closer as the Bulldogs rounded out the scoring with a run in the sixth.
WSU outhit Butler in the opener 9-5 as the top three batters in the Raider lineup combined for seven hits, with Boreing and Archer having two and China Frost three.
The Bulldogs again scored first in the second game with a run in the first, only to see Wright State answer with one of its own in the second. Michelle Baker led off with a hit to center and after advancing to third on a Reagan Stofcheck bunt and an Alex Machen single, scored on a Jess Gorman sacrifice fly to left.
Butler went back in front with a run in the third and it stayed that way until WSU went in front for good with two in the fifth. Clark led off with a walk and went to second on an error as Frost reached on a fielder's choice. After Archer bunted both runners into scoring position, another error and a Kortney Tackett sacrifice fly to left resulted in two runs and a 3-2 Raider lead.
The Bulldogs had a golden opportunity to tie the game in the sixth, loading the bases with no outs, but Krystian DeWitt (12-21) pitched out of the jam with two fly balls and a strikeout. Chelsea Contant then picked up her third save of the season by pitching a scoreless seventh.
Frost added two more hits in the second game, giving her five on the day.
Wright State (18-24, 6-8) and Butler (17-26, 7-7 Horizon) wrap up the three-game series with a single game Wednesday at 2:00.
