Baseball Pulls Out 4-2 Win Over Butler

Box Score

The Wright State baseball team scored three times in the bottom of the eighth to erase a 2-1 deficit and post a 4-2 Horizon League decision over Butler Sunday afternoon at Nischwitz Stadium.

WSU opened the scoring in the first on a RBI single by Zach Tanner, only to see the Bulldogs tie it with an unearned run in the second and go in front in the third as Austin Miller singled in a run.

It stayed that way until the bottom of the eighth despite the Raiders leaving two on in the fifth and having Tanner and Garrett Gray lead off the seventh with hits.

In the eighth, Wright State finally broke through to take the lead for good.  Jake Hibberd led off with a walk and after going to second on a Corey Davis bunt, moved to third on a wild pitch.  Following an intentional walk to Tristan Moore, Ryan Ashe tied it with a single up the middle.  Tanner then made it 3-2 by chopping a hit into left and Justin Kopale later had a sacrifice fly to center to drive in the final run.

After winning pitcher Jordan Marker (7-1) retired the first batter in the ninth, it was left to Michael Schum for the save, which he earned to give him 11 on the season and a school-record 35 for his career.

Marker struck out three in 2.1 innings for the win in relief of starter Cody Kopilchack, who allowed just one earned run in six innings, scattering seven hits and two walks while fanning nine.

Tanner finished with three hits and two RBI while Michael Timm had two hits and Tristan Moore scored twice.

Wright State (30-14, 16-5 Horizon), which reached the 30-win plateau for the seventh straight season, heads to Cincinnati for a 6:30 game on Wednesday, May 2, before hosting Valparaiso in a key Horizon League series May 4-6.
