Softball Splits Pair at Hoosier Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Wright State softball team split a pair of one-run decisions Saturday at the Hoosier Classic in Bloomington, Indiana, defeating Michigan State 2-1 before falling to Central Michigan 3-2.

In the opener, Michigan State scored an unearned run in the third and it stayed 1-0 until the Raiders tied the game in the fifth.  Hanna Floyd led off with a hit up the middle, advanced to second on an Alex Machen ground out, went to third on a wild pitch and scored as Alanna Williams reached on an error.

WSU then scored the game-winner in the sixth.  With one out, Taylor Knore walked and moved up to second as Kortney Tackett reached on an error.  A Floyd hit allowed pinch-runner Jess Gorman to go to third and she scored on a passed ball.

The Spartans had a runner reach base in both the sixth and the seventh, but a double play erased the runner in the sixth and the runner in the seventh was left stranded as Krystian DeWitt retired the final two batters on a ground out and a line out.

DeWitt (2-5) struck out six in the complete-game effort.

Central Michigan took the lead in the second game with a run in the fourth, only to see Wright State rally with two runs in the fifth.  With two outs and a runner on first, a Kristi Boreing hit and an Angie Clark walk loaded the bases for Jess Gorman, who delivered a two-run single to right.

The Chippewas, however, answered right back with two in the sixth and then held on for the win despite the Raiders loading the bases in the bottom of the seventh.

With the two games Saturday, nine of WSU's 17 games so far this season have been decided by one run.

Wright State (4-13) wraps up tournament play on Sunday with two more games, taking on Central Michigan at 2:30 and host Indiana at 4:45.
