Men's Soccer Opens League Play With 2-0 Win

Box Score

The Wright State men's soccer team opened Horizon League play Saturday night with a 2-0 win over Valparaiso at Alumni Field.

Playing in front of a crowd of 1,081, the Raiders provided early excitement as sophomore forward Brett Elder scored his fourth goal of the season just 2:40 into the contest.  Elder received a pass from junior midfielder Chris Dupont and knocked in the shot from the right side of the goal.

WSU added another goal late in the first half as junior midfielder Michael Hayes tallied his first goal of the season at the 36:37 mark.  Elder and freshman forward Eric Lynch were credited with assists, Elder's first and Lynch's second of the year.

From there, the Raider defense and freshman goalkeeper Tyler Blackmer, making just his second career start, took over as they held Valparaiso (3-2-3, 0-1-1 Horizon) to just nine shots on the night, with Blackmer recording three saves in earning the shutout.

Wright State (2-4-1, 1-0 Horizon) hits the road for two matches next week, taking on IUPUI on Tuesday, October 1, at 7:00 followed by Milwaukee on Saturday, October 5, at 8:00 Eastern.
