Men's Soccer Advances to HL Finals

Box Score

Sophomore forward Eric Lynch showed why he was named the Horizon League Player of the Year as he collected an assist off his corner kick and came back to net a goal of his own as the men's soccer team defeated #2 seed Detroit 2-0 Thursday night in the semifinals of the Horizon League Tournament in Rochester, Michigan.

With the win, the Raiders advance to Saturday's title match against #1 and host Oakland for a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Golden Grizzlies advanced with a 2-1 double overtime decision over #4 seed Cleveland State.

Senior defender Emeka Ononye scored off of Lynch's corner kick in the 27th minute of the match for his third goal of the season.  It was Lynch's nation-leading 13th assist.  Lynch scored his seventh goal of the season from the right side of the net in the 34th minute from senior midfielder Michael Hayes, who recorded his third assist of the year

The Raiders held on from there with strong defense as sophomore goalkeeper Tyler Blackmer recorded four saves in posting his second straight shutout and eighth of the season.  Detroit outshot the Raiders 13-8 as Lynch ended with a team-high three shots overall.

"Tonight, our young guys took another big step in learning how to win tough playoff matches," WSU head coach Bryan Davis said.  "Detroit gave us all they had tonight and I'm proud of the result.  That being said, we are going to have to be much better to win Saturday.  It'll be an awesome challenge."

Wright State will be going after its first ever NCAA Tournament appearance, after falling short in 2011 to Loyola.  The Raiders (12-6-2) have not won 12 games since 2001.  Earlier in the season, WSU tied Oakland in Michigan 1-1.  The game will air live on ESPN3.
